What is Beaujolais Nouveau?
Beaujolais Nouveau is a young, fruity red wine made from Gamay grapes grown in the Beaujolais region of France. The production process of Beaujolais Nouveau is characterized by its speed and freshness. An accelerated process is used, called carbonic maceration, where fermentation takes place in the uncrushed grapes. Beaujolais Nouveau is meant to be consumed young, typically within a few months of its release, to appreciate its fresh and fruity qualities.
Why Celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau Day?
In the mid-20th century, clever marketing strategies by producers, particularly Georges Duboeuf, helped popularize Beaujolais Nouveau. Duboeuf, along with other winemakers, began promoting the wine's release at an annual event on the the third Thursday of November, creating anticipation and excitement.
This timing coincided with the end of the harvest season, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Beaujolais Nouveau Day is not merely about the wine itself, as it has become a symbol of celebration, togetherness, and festivity that accompanies its release.
